This inaugural course was a tremendous success, with lively discussions, some challenging viewpoints, and tremendous feedback from the delegates. Participants came from around the world including Australia, USA, Canada and several European countries.
The best part of the course was ... "Pippa's management of: people, the flow of the course, discussions, organization, etc. Amazingly skilled at leading a group of people and elevating their knowledge"
"The course was very helpful - I liked that it covered so many different aspects of the role. It helped to see the big picture. But it was very practical with useful tips as well. The case-studies were well chosen and brought up interesting issues."
This "virtual classroom" course has been developed from the successful face-to-face course run annually since 2006. It will provide both the content of the the face-to-face course, and allow for interaction between participants by using virtual break-out groups for discussion. By keeping the numbers low, all participants will have opportunities to talk, discuss, and contribute: it will definitely not be an event where participants sit back and listen to lengthy lectures. I have used my experience of organizing and running many online workshops and meetings to ensure that the value of meeting other editors is retained.
The focus of the course is how to improve the success of the journal. It considers what editors can change and influence, and how they can improve the quality of what they publish and the impact that their journal makes. It is therefore not a “how to” course, but is rather a “why not” course – making editors aware of the strategic options they have and asking them to consider which would best serve their journal. All elements of the course are presented in the context of good practice, and international ethical standards which are embedded into all modules.
By the end of the short course editors will know where they can make changes, and they will have ideas for large and small adjustments that will improve the impact and quality of their journals.
The online course is presented in three, 3-hour workshops:
Workshop 1: Publishing better content: working with authors
By the end of this workshop participants will :
Workshop 2: Publishing better content: peer review
By the end of this workshop participants will :
Workshop 3: Increasing visibility and impact
By the end of this workshop participants will :
Each workshop will be restricted to a maximum of 20 participants.
Each workshop will have 3 sections, each of which will comprise:
-- Short plenary lecture
-- Breakout discussion and feedback for groups of 4 or 5 editors
The breakout sessions will centre around case studies and exercises based on real-life examples.
Each participant will be sent the course handbook as a PDF file in advance of the workshops.
The handbook is a c.100pp resource developed over several years. It supports the course by providing background information and workshop exercises; and in addition it can be used as a future reference guide for any editor.
About 1 month after the workshops each participant will be invited to attend a 1-hour seminar. They will be asked for topics that they would like to be covered during the seminar.
The seminar will comprise a series of talks with space for questions from participants.
Attendance at this seminar will be optional.
